Tofino, British Columbia Train Vacations
Tofino, a small coastal village of about 1,600 residents, is one of Canada’s secret gems secluded on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. At Tofino's doorstep is the Clayoquot Sound region, a world UNESCO biosphere reserve. This area boasts one of British Columbia's most cherished nature reserves—the Pacific Rim National Park—which comprises rugged coastlines and lush temperate rainforests that offer a feast of natural exquisiteness for the nature lover.
With a seafaring history dating back to 1792, Tofino was discovered during the European exploration of Vancouver Island by Commanders Galiano and Valdez. The site of Tofino was named in 1792 after a Spanish admiral and hydrographer, Don Vincente Tofino, who accompanied the expedition.
Near the turn of the century, Tofino homesteaders eventually shifted from the island to the peninsula. The Anglican Church, which still stands on Second Street and Main was built in 1913 after the Church of England provided funds and instruction for a church to be erected on the most beautiful pinnacle of Vancouver Island—Tofino was no doubt chosen.
Known as Canada's "Tough City" for its long, rainy and tempest winters, Tofino was primarily a maritime trading town until the 1950s when a logging road was punched through the mountains between Port Alberni and the coast.
Today, its sheer untamed natural beauty makes the Tofino area a popular tourist destination in the summer, attracting surfers, nature lovers, campers, whale watchers, fishermen, or anyone just looking to be close to nature.
Every March, thousands of grey whales migrate to the Sound and kick off the annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival. In addition, the first week-end of June brings the ever-growing Tofino Food and Wine Festival, which features British Columbia wines and showcases the creations of Tofino chefs. If you’re looking to come in mid-September, Tofino celebrates its famous “Art in the Gardens festival," a two-day local arts and music festival.
If you’re looking untamed natural beauty, whale watching, surfing and incredible sightseeing adventures—Tofino is the place to come and see! We offer a wide variety of Canada train vacation packages that range from quick, 5-day excursions on the VIA Rail to 12-day journeys on the world-class Rocky Mountaineer.
Let Canadian Train Vacations help you book the perfect vacation today. Our knowledgeable staff can help you plan the ultimate Tofino experience, and can even help you create a customized, affordable tour of Canada.
