Sample Canadian maple syrups straight from the source in Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia is a Canadian maple syrup hub and spring welcomes a multitude of maple festivals throughout the Halifax area. Travelers on train trips across Canada finding themselves in the Maritimes this March and April cannot miss the chance to try this sweet treat.
Nova Scotia's sugar taps are among the most abundant in Canada. More than 85 percent of the world's maple syrup supply comes from within the country's borders and Nova Scotia alone produces 143,200 liters of pure maple syrup every year - it takes 40 liters of sap to produce a single liter of syrup.
Starting with the Antigonish Lions Hall Maple Festival in late March, visitors can enjoy pancakes and sausages slathered in any grade of the tree sap. Sugar Moon Farm is at the mouth of the Rogart Mountain Hiking Trail and tourists can view the taps throughout the forest. Every weekend in the early spring, many Canadian rail tour passengers try sugar on snow, which is one of the best ways to enjoy maple syrup.
