Arrive Vancouver* 1 night aboard VIA rail 1 night Jasper 2 nights Banff Depart Calgary *Can be done in reverse

Please note, like most of our Canada rail packages & tours, this railway vacation can be customized to your needs just ask one of our local experts when you call.

Eastbound itinerary shown. Westbound follows the same itinerary in reverse.

Day 1 – Arrive in Vancouver Depart on VIA Rail’s Canadian Train
Frequently voted amongst the world’s most livable and beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver is surrounded by mountains and ocean. Meet a driver at the airport, to take you to the train station for an evening departure. Depending on your time of arrival, you can relax and dine al fresco or get out and explore on foot or with a guided bicycle tour of Vancouver (ask your vacation advisor for more details).

The ‘Canadian’ is Canada’s most famous train, the route links Vancouver and Jasper using original steel rail cars from the 1950’s. Vancouver to Jasper is the most spectacular stretch of the whole journey. The train crosses the arable land of the Fraser Valley, travels northeast through the British Columbia interior, passing the Lac Du Bois and Wells Grey Provincial parks before ascending the Canadian Rockies and arriving in Jasper National Park the following day.

Day 2 – Heart of the Canadian Rockies – Arrive in Jasper
Arrive this afternoon into the Canadian Rockies and have the remainder of the afternoon to explore the town. Jasper is a quaint mountain town surrounded by the towering mountains and pristine wilderness of Jasper National Park a UNESCO world heritage site.

Day 3 – The Icefields Parkway – Jasper to Banff
Travel along the spine of the Rockies, on what is surely one of the most beautiful roads in the world - the Icefields Parkway.

There are
2 options for exploring the Icefields Parkway today:

• Option 1: Small Group Sightseeing Tour
With a small group and guide, explore the Icefields and its main attractions. Stop to enjoy a picnic lunch, walk on the Athabasca Glacier, and marvel at the Glacier Skywalk. In the late afternoon arrive in Banff, a welcome change of pace, this bustling mountain town has a variety of things to do and see.
Activity rating: Easy

• Option 2: Private Icefields Tour with Helicopter Experience
Spend the day with a private driver-guide, to explore the Icefields at your own pace. Then, step away from the crowds and take a helicopter tour abundant in natural beauty, glaciers and waterfalls. Leave from an exclusive Icefields base and soar over Cline Pass and over Cline, Lion and Lioness Glaciers. You’ll also view a spectacular 900ft waterfall flowing from two aqua green lakes!
Activity rating: Easy

Your day concludes in the bustling mountain town of Banff. Overnight in Banff.

Day 4 – Rocky Mountain Natural Beauty of Banff
Fill your lungs with cool, fresh Rockies air and head out for a day of exploration.

You have
3 options to choose from today to help you enjoy Banff to its fullest.

• Option 1: Banff Sightseeing Tour
Explore the historic sights, hear the folklore, and visit scenic viewpoints around the Banff town site on a small group bus tour.
Activity rating: Easy

• Option 2: Sunrise Photography Tour

Ideal for the amateur photographer wanting to increase their skills with a manual camera. This is a sure way to make friends and family at home jealous!
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 3: Banff Heli-Hike and Picnic
Get away from the crowds and soar above the peaks of the Canadian Rockies on a guided heli-hike. View pristine and breathtaking vistas that will leave you speechless, and step out into a natural landscape inaccessible to the average tourist.
Activity rating: Moderate

Insider tip: We’ve included admission to the Banff Gondola today. We recommend an evening gondola ride, once the crowds have dispersed for the day. As you glide through the air, the panoramic vistas at the summit will completely take your breath away.

Day 5
Much too soon you leave the fresh air and colourful sights of the Canadian Rockies as your Canada train trip comes to an end as you make your way to Calgary Airport.

Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

With the exception of our guided wildlife and northern lights train trips, our vacations are not typically "escorted." We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

Thank you for a wonderful vacation. Our expectations were more than met. The accommodations were excellent - the rooms, the operations, and the personnel. The train was perfect and a highlight. We slept like babies, saw/followed... read more the Columbia in the a.m.,and had absolutely wonderful meals. Staff is wonderful. The train station and delays are a bit of a challenge. (We departed 4 hours late from Jasper so all that literature from the train people about checking in baggage on time was quite humorous. That's not a complaint, just an observation.) The best part was that we met people from all over the world and learned so much about the Canadian Rockies. Loved the experience. Thank you so much for all of your efforts.

You were right about the size of the cabin on Via Rail though. I strongly recommend that you only sell the prestige cabin to anyone over 40! I appreciate your wise advice on that! All the connections and pickups went smoothly and the accommodation was excellent.... read more It was well worth spending a little extra to stay at the Fairmont at Jasper and Rimrock at Banff. We had dinner on the outside patio at the Fairmont sitting in the late evening sun, gazing across the lake at the snow covered mountains whilst elk grazed on the lawn and kids below us played in the heated pool. It was all a bit surreal. The view from our room at the Rimrock was amazing. The suggestion of the Canadian train journey to Jasper was good as well. The amount of time on the train was just right and after we got used to the size of the sleeping compartment we really enjoyed this leg of the journey and got to meet some interesting folk in the observation car and over breakfast and lunch, and the scenery was stunning. I even saw a bear trotting beside the tracks on the way into Jasper. Perhaps the only disappointment was that the train was late getting into Jasper by a few hours so we didn't have much time to look around and in hindsight, perhaps we could have spent a whole day there with another night at the lodge. Maybe warn people taking the train that delays are frequent as it waits for freight trains to pass. I imagine this is the same on the Rocky Mountaineer as well. The trip from Jasper to Banff was also a highlight - especially the Glacier excursion. We found all of the tour operators to be professional, friendly and organised. The airport trip went smoothly. The earlier departure was the right approach even though the later one would have timed out fine, but we felt more at ease knowing we had the extra time. The morning worked out well anyway. We woke... read more early and walked downtown for breakfast and back. By the time we left the Fairmont Springs we were satisfied that we had done everything we had hoped to do. Our flight out of Calgary was delayed. We feared that we would miss our connection and be stranded in Chicago overnight, but as happened throughout our trip, the timing worked out fine and everything was clear and ready when we needed it. The whole trip worked out perfectly. Just enough time in Vancouver, just enough time on the train, just enough time everywhere. On paper it appeared to be too jammed packed, but in reality it was just the right amount of time. We felt we experienced each leg properly. All of the tours were well run and great fun. It took 11 hours to get from Jasper to Banff, but we were blown away by the views. Each of those operators were spot on – on time, well planned and good fun. We had train buddies, tour buddies, gondola buddies, that we would bump into along the way and greet each other like lifelong friends. I was especially pleased with your care and planning on our behalf. The weather had the potential to throw off the entire trip, but you kept us informed and confident that it would work out and of course it did.
