Itinerary

Please note, like most of our Canada rail packages & tours, this railway vacation can be customized to your needs - just ask one of our local experts when you call.

Eastbound itinerary is shown. A westbound itinerary is also available.

Day 1 – Arrive in Vancouver
One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver is surrounded by towering mountains and sparkling ocean. From the very beginning, we ensure your vacation is off to the best start! Walk out of the airport and right into a private vehicle. Your driver will help orient you to our hometown, Vancouver!

Feature Dinner in Vancouver
Did you know Vancouver is one of the top culinary destinations in the world? We want to make sure you don’t eat at the tourist trap restaurant across the street from your hotel, rather have the best meal in an amazing setting that ensures you make memories over a great meal!

Day 2 – Explore Vancouver
Today you have 3 options to choose from to help you enjoy Vancouver to the fullest.

• Option 1: Kayaking Tour from Granville Island
Explore Vancouver on an intimate, small group tour of False Creek departing from Granville Island. Keep an eye out for herons, seals and eagles as you discover Vancouver’s unique neighbourhoods by kayak.
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 2: Vancouver Tour by Bicycle
You’re not one to travel along with the tourist crowd and prefer to slip into life like a local. This tour delivers exactly that – the bike is a Vancouverite’s preferred mode of transport! With an extensive cycle lane network in Vancouver, this tour travels along well maintained and scenic bike paths. The tour highlights the best of Vancouver food, history, ecology, and culture. Visit the Seawall and Stanley Park, eat lunch at Granville Island Public Market and see historic Gastown and Chinatown.
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 3: Vancouver by Land, Sea, and Air
Get a taste of everything we love about the West Coast. Start your journey from downtown Vancouver with a shuttle to Horseshoe Bay. From here, enjoy a scenic zodiac tour – keep an eye out for seals, eagles and other west coast marine wildlife as you zip across the water. After building up an appetite, enjoy a delicious meal and take in the sights and small-town atmosphere of Bowen Island. Finish your adventure with a scenic and thrilling seaplane flight back to downtown Vancouver.
Activity rating: Moderate

Day 3 – On the Rocky Mountaineer – Vancouver to Kamloops
This morning is the first day of your two day Canadian Rockies Rail Journey. The passing scenery is breathtaking; step out onto the outdoor viewing platform and feel the cool wind against your cheeks. Enjoy seamless train station transfers, as well as gourmet breakfasts and lunches onboard. Overnight in Kamloops.

Insider tip: For those looking for a classic sleeper train experience, ask us to substitute in the ‘Canadian Train’ from Vancouver to Jasper. Spend an additional day at your leisure in Vancouver before boarding the train in the evening and settling into your cozy private cabin.

Day 4 – On the Rocky Mountaineer – Kamloops to Jasper
The exhilaration of your Canadian train trip continues today, as you enjoy another day of great food, service, and incredible scenery. In the late afternoon, the train pulls into the station in Jasper. Breathe in the cool, fresh mountain air of the Rockies - you’ve arrived!

After disembarking the train, pick up your rental car to begin your exciting self-drive through the Canadian Rockies. Overnight in Jasper.

Day 5 – In the Canadian Wilderness – Jasper Adventure
Spend the day exploring the jewel of the Rockies, Jasper.

You have
3 options to choose from today to help you tour Jasper.

• Option 1: Private Nature Walk or Hike
Drink in the sights, smells and sounds of nature on this professionally guided interpretive walk or hike in Jasper National Park. Enjoy a pace suited to your fitness level, and plenty of time for photos. Discover wildlife, admire rare alpine wildflowers, and stand in awe of magnificent valley views.
Activity rating: Moderate - Challenging (suited to your level)

• Option 2: Evening Canoe Paddle
The ambiance of an evening on a mountain lake is breathtaking - fish breaking the surface of the still water, the call of a loon, the sighting of beaver, or perhaps a moose grazing. Paddle with a guide across the lake, in a large canoe. What a peaceful way to end your day, with the sun setting behind the surrounding mountains.
Activity rating:
Moderate

• Option 3: Guided Rock Climbing Experience
Only a short distance from Jasper along the Athabasca River is the perfect limestone wall for rock climbing. Receive expert coaching and challenge yourself as you learn how to rappel to the bottom. No experience is necessary on this small group tour.
Activity rating: Moderate (Can you climb a ladder or go for a short run or hike?)

Day 6 – The Icefields Parkway – Jasper to Emerald Lake
Drive along the spine of the Rockies, on what is surely one of the most beautiful roads in the world - the Icefields Parkway.

Along the way, you have
3 options to choose from to help you discover the Icefields.

• Option 1: Guided Icewalk along the Athabasca Glacier
Walk along the largest mass of ice in the Rocky Mountains - the Columbia Icefields. The most accessible part of the Icefields is the Athabasca Glacier - spreading six kilometers towards the Icefields Parkway. Join an experienced guide and small group of adventurers on a once in a lifetime experience as you hike along the glacier - stand in awe of a place few people get to see firsthand.
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 2:
Icefields Helicopter Experience
Step away from the crowds and take a helicopter tour abundant in natural beauty, glaciers and waterfalls. Leave from an exclusive Icefields base and soar over Cline Pass and over Cline, Lion and Lioness Glaciers. You’ll also view a spectacular 900ft waterfall flowing from two aqua green lakes!
Activity rating: Easy

• Option 3: Icefields Heli-Hike Experience
See the Icefields from a different viewpoint on a helicopter tour and guided heli-walk. Leave from an exclusive Icefields base and soar over Cline Pass, glaciers and waterfalls. Your pilot will land in a safe, secluded area and lead you on an unforgettable walk.
Activity rating: Moderate

After your time on the Icefields Parkway, make a short drive back into British Columbia for a stay at the Emerald Lake Lodge.

Feature Dinner at Emerald Lake
No matter how you choose to tour, this evening you’ll relax and refresh with an indulgent dining experience. Surrounded by spectacular lake views and attentive service, indulge in a 3-course meal.

Day 7 – Explore Yoho National Park
Today you are free to explore on your own. If you prefer to stay close to your hotel, Emerald Lake is a top destination in Yoho National Park, with an unmatched diversity of activities and landscapes. The hike around the lake is one of the least strenuous but most rewarding in the park. Emerald Lake is a fantastic place to see wildlife, as animals are drawn to the important water source. Borrow a canoe and watch for eagles, moose, and osprey as you paddle.

Insider Tip: Add on a Rafting Tour on the Kicking Horse River
Get a major thrill on the Kicking Horse with a river rafting tour. Challenge yourself by working with fellow paddlers to get through up to class 4+ rapids. Finish your trip 20km downstream with a well-deserved BBQ lunch.
Activity rating: Moderate

Day 8 – Yoho National Park to Banff
Only a short drive away is the famous setting of Lake Louise. Located in the heart of Banff National Park and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Louise is known as Canada’s emerald of the Rockies. To make the most of your visit, ask us for our
Lake Louise Activity Menu, from which you can choose activities such as a scenic canoe paddle, Lake Louise interpretive gondola, a guided hike or Afternoon Tea.

After soaking in the mountain views, continue your drive to Banff. A lively mountain town with great restaurants, Banff is a welcome change of pace. Enjoy strolling Banff Avenue or try one of the numerous outdoor adventures offered in this outdoor playground. Overnight in Banff.

Day 9 – Explore Banff
Fill your lungs with cool, fresh Rockies air and head out for a day of exploration. All guests receive admission to the Banff Gondola for a ride up to Sulphur Mountain.

You also have 3 options today to help you explore Banff.

• Option 1: Guided Hike in Sunshine Meadows
Spend your day on top of the world and away from the crowds at Sunshine Meadows, widely known as the most stunning alpine setting in the Canadian Rockies. Your guide will take you along the network of gentle trails that wind their way around the meadows.
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 2: Via Ferrata Tour
Step out of your comfort zone and test your limits by scaling Mt. Norquay! Begin with an introduction to the equipment, before heading up into the mountains. This 4-hour tour is a great entry into the world of Via Ferrata, with an experienced guide leading you along a 1.4km route, and reaching a height of 2300 metres above sea level.
Activity rating: Challenging

• Option 3: Cave Tour
Discover the amazing world of caves! Spend approximately two hours underground crawling past prehistoric bones and investigating ancient cave formations. This won’t be an experience you soon forget!
Activity rating: Moderate

Hidden Gem!
As the insiders, we have been to many restaurants across Canada. End your vacation with a bang and allow us to make dinner reservations for the evening. Just one part of Fresh Tracks Canada’s value added service. Psst! Head up the mountain to Sky Bistro for dining with a view!

Day 10 – Depart from Calgary
Much too soon you leave the fresh air and colorful sights of the Rockies as your Canada train trip comes to an end.

Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

With the exception of our guided wildlife and northern lights train trips, our vacations are not typically "escorted." We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.
