Itinerary

Day 1 – Canada vacation begins - board the Canadian train
Meet your driver at the Vancouver Airport and ride in comfort to the train station. Your train awaits this evening, so climb aboard VIA Rail's Canadian and settle into a cozy cabin. You will experience the best of Canada by train, as you savor a glass of wine in the dome car while you meet your traveling companions. Fall asleep looking forward to tomorrow's voyage through the wintery Canadian Rockies. Overnight on board in a private cabin.

Day 2 – Into the heart of the Canadian Rockies on your Canada Vacation – arrive in Jasper
Peek out of your window this morning to see silent, snow covered forests rushing by. Winter mountain valleys soar as you relax in first class comfort on the Canadian train. Feel the embrace of crisp mountain air as you step off the train in Jasper, and meet your friendly driver to take you to your mountain abode for the night. Overnight in Jasper

Day 3 - Maligne Canyon Icewalk

Today, your interpretive guide will safely take you down beneath the frozen surface of the Maligne River - don't worry, the water levels have dropped with the freeze - leaving a magical world of ice formations and shelves. Along the way you will learn interesting facts about the area while taking in the amazing scenery of the frozen canyon. Take the rest of the day to explore the town or relax at your hotel. Overnight in Jasper

Day 4 – The Icefields Parkway – Jasper to Lake Louise
This morning, enjoy a scenic transfer along the most famous road in the Rockies - the Icefields Parkway - recognized as one of Canada’s most beautiful drive. Each turn reveals frozen waterfalls and impossibly vast mountain valleys, so be sure to have your camera ready!  End this day of adventure with Canada's most famous scene - Lake Louise where brilliant white peaks seem to plunge into the frozen water, and glaciers tumble down the mountainsides.
Dogsledding is the most popular winter activity and an adventure suitable for anyone. Bundled in the sled with warm blankets, cushions and a cozy corduroy sled bag, your dogsledding tour takes you along the base of giant peaks in Lake Louise to a pass at the Continental Divide, the high point separating the east of North America from the west of North America. Get to know the dogs, their guides, the basics of mushing and even a chance to drive the team of dogs back to the base!
Reflect on your unique Canadian experience while enjoying a delicious dinner at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
Your Canadian vacation includes a stay at the spectacular Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Overnight in Lake Louise.

Day 5 – Lake Louise – Canadian Rocky Mountain natural beauty
Fill your day with mountain splendor. If you can walk, you can snowshoe! Winter reigns supreme along the Great Divide (it’s covered by snow for more than 5 months each year!) and this area is superb for this ancient and efficient mode of travel. After gearing up and getting a brief introduction to snowshoeing, you and your fully certified guide will venture into the forest to look for signs of wildlife that have adapted to the demanding winter conditions. For those travelers looking for something more relaxing, choose a private sleigh ride for two instead and relive the experience of the original visitors to Lake Louise. A winter sleigh ride to the end of Lake Louise offers a soul-cleansing sense of peacefulness as you breathe the fragrant air, gaze at the mountain panoramas, and enjoy being surrounded by spectacular scenery. Traditionally styled sleighs, feature cozy, upholstered seats and blankets to keep you warm and comfortable, while you enjoy the sights western style!
Later this afternoon, take a scenic transfer to Calgary, Alberta’s largest city. Overnight in Calgary.

Day 6 - Depart Calgary Airport
Much too soon you leave the fresh air and colorful sights of Canada, as your Canadian train trip comes to an end.

Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

While our trips are not "escorted," we combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

Great Vacation! Thanks to you for helping make my vacation very memorable! Vancouver Airport was really cool, the city was very easy to explore on foot with a map, I walked to the Blue Horizon to catch the shuttle to Capilano Suspension... read more Bridge where I was offered a $2 off coupon. Capilano Suspension Bridge and staff were awesome and I would highly recommend. The hotel staff were friendly and the room was great, birthday champagne/chocolate and the food was terrific. On VIA Rail the guests and staff were all great and I would completely recommend that experience to anyone. On the Maligne Canyon Icewalk the guide was great and showed us beautiful sites while making us feel safe walking in unknown terrain in the dark. We left before sun-up for the transfer from Jasper to lake Louise, but it was beautiful watching the sun come out and shine on the mountains. Although the transfer was not a "tour" and one of our companions had an appointment to keep, the driver did stop at the Columbia Icefield Glacier and bathroom break for those of us not commuting. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, WOW! the view from my room, room amenities, check-in, complimentary birthday wine, walk across Lake Louise, snow shoe adventure, walk to outlook point, souvenir shops, other guests were top notch. I ran across another person on the same tour as myself who seemed very happy with his trip. I would travel with Fresh Tracks again.

The trip along the Columbia Icefield was superb

I want to tell you about some of the aspects of my trip that were outstanding: The drivers in Vancouver were terrific. The tour of Vancouver was terrific. Wonderful guide, and we managed to see so much! The Capilano Suspension... read more Bridge and those treetop walks were wonderful! The snow-shoeing was fabulous. Our guide was super and had many fascinating things to tell us, also loved to laugh. The dogsledding was terrific. Great fun. The trip along the Columbia Ice Fields was superb, and we had a driver who told us all about the geology of the region. The train ride was wonderful, although I would have liked knowing about the Premium cabins. I might have liked to spring for one. One of my favorite moments was arriving in Jasper: the darkened town, quiet as can be, and the big silver train, huffing and puffing. It was a magical scene. And finally, the mountains! The most beautiful I've ever seen, and that includes the Andes, the Himalayas, the Alps and our own American Rockies!

Unforgettable honeymoon trip

We absolutely LOVED the Canada trip! We did not want the trip to end! I will try to send some of our pictures, we got some really great ones on the Johnston Canyon Ice Hike and the dogsledding and snowmobiling trips as well! My... read more new husband and I were very happy with the service we got and the way everything was set up. The Fairmont in Jasper was amazing - they were the most accommodating of all the places we stayed (free room upgrade, complimentary champagne & chocolate strawberries in the room, free dessert at dinner in their restaurant). The only thing we might have changed is perhaps the Deer Lodge in Lake Louise, it was nice and quiet, but perhaps a little too quiet for us, as we felt sort of like the only people there and we wanted to be around a few more guests at times, but the service there was good and the rooms were nice, and we loved the roof-top hot tub. If we did the trip again, which we have mentioned several times since we got home, we'd maybe like to spend two days in Banff and one day in Lake Louise, since there's so much more to see and do around Banff that we would have liked to have just maybe one more day. The Fox hotel was very nice as well, and the service there was great, too. All our transfers and excursion pick ups were on-time and friendly, and we had a blast on all of them! Thank you again for an unforgettable honeymoon trip! I'll send some pics as soon as possible!
