Cheapest type of travel with rigid itineraries and crowds.
Day 1 – Arrival in Calgary – Transfer to Lake Louise
After arrival at the Calgary Airport, transfer into the spectacular Canadian Rocky Mountains, to stay at the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Gaze at the incredible scene while relaxing in the hotel or perhaps while paddling along the turquoise waters of the lake in a Canadian canoe.
This evening you can either choose to stay at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, or at the intimate Moraine Lake Lodge.
After a day of travelling, enjoy dinner at Lake Louise or Moraine Lake! Relax and unwind with 5-star cuisine and attentive service. Take a moment to soak in the incredible lake views.
Day 2 – In the Canadian Rockies – Lake Louise to Banff
Spend the morning exploring and enjoying what may be the most famous view of the Canadian Rockies - the glacier water of Lake Louise. Later in the day, join a guided scenic transfer, from Lake Louise to the lovely mountain town of Banff. Overnight in Banff.
Insider tip: Ask us about our Lake Louise activity menu to make the most of your day with a guided canoe, guided hike, gondola ride, or decadent afternoon tea service!
Day 3 – In the Canadian Rockies – Explore Banff
Fill your lungs with cool, fresh Rockies air and head out for a day of exploration.
You have 3 options to choose from today to help you enjoy Banff to its fullest.
• Option 1: Banff Sightseeing Tour
Explore the historic sights, hear the folklore, and visit scenic viewpoints surrounding the Banff town site on a small group sightseeing tour.
Activity rating: Easy
• Option 2: Banff Photography Tour
Explore the wilderness of Banff National Park with a professional guide, and learn how to take great photos or improve your camera skills. This is a sure way to make friends and family at home jealous!
Activity rating: Moderate
• Option 3: Banff Heli-Hike and Picnic
Soar above majestic peaks and get away from the crowds of Banff on a guided heli-hike and picnic. Marvel at pristine and breathtaking vistas that will leave you speechless.
Activity rating: Moderate
Insider tip: We’ve included admission to the Banff Gondola today. We recommend an evening gondola ride, once the crowds have dispersed for the day. As you glide through the air, the panoramic vistas at the summit will completely take your breath away.
Day 4 – Board Rocky Mountaineer – Banff to Kamloops
Begin your first day onboard the Rocky Mountaineer with a short transfer from your hotel to the Banff train station. Climb over Kicking Horse Pass and travel through the Spiral Tunnels, an engineering marvel from 1909 allowing trains to travel up the steep grade. View drastic changes in the landscape as the Rocky Mountaineer travels into the interior along rocky lakeshores, and over high mountain passes. Enjoy gourmet food, great company and awe-inspiring scenery. Overnight in a standard hotel in Kamloops.
Day 5 – On Board Rocky Mountaineer – Kamloops to Vancouver
Re-board the Rocky Mountaineer this morning for the second day of your rail journey. Today you will be treated to a wide range of scenery as you travel through the Fraser River Valley along winding dramatic river canyons to the arid interior of the province. Relax and enjoy the impeccable service aboard the Rocky Mountaineer. Have your camera on hand to snap a few photos of the Coast and Cascade Mountains. Upon arrival at the Rocky Mountaineer station in Vancouver, you will be transferred to your hotel in downtown Vancouver.
Day 6 – Vancouver
Vancouver is one of the few cities in the world where a typical day might include a morning on the ski slopes and a relaxing afternoon sailing on the glistening waters. For a real taste of the Vancouver lifestyle, we suggest adding a guided cycling tour around the famous Stanley Park Seawall (ask your agent about adding on a tour). Later, catch the sunset from the beach at English Bay or board the gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain for a cocktail and a spectacular view.
Day 7 – Adventure in Alaska Begins – Fly from Vancouver to Juneau
Leave the urban environment of Vancouver behind and fly north to the wilds of Juneau, Alaska. A private vehicle will take you to the airport in time for your flight. In Juneau, spend a day at leisure enjoying the eclectic mix of culture of the town. From wildlife to the arts or local brews, there is plenty to occupy your time. Take a moment to enjoy the surroundings of old-growth forests, snowcapped mountains, glaciers, and abundant wildlife. Overnight in Juneau.
Day 8 – Board your Alaskan Cruise – Embarkation
Feel the excitement build as you are led to the Safari Endeavour, your home base for the next 7 nights. Stepping onboard, your friendly crew greets you with a champagne toast and warm smiles. Vast wilderness and scenic channels await you.
Day 9 – Icy Strait
Watch for the thrilling spray of a breaching humpback on the horizon as you sail into whale territory this morning. Waters rich with marine life, like porpoise, sea lions, and whales, provide an amazing day of adventure photography. Make the most of your day by taking advantage of the keen eye of the wildlife experts onboard; visit the Captain on the bridge or the Expedition Leader on the main deck. Later in the day, explore your surrounds by kayak or skiff and keep your eyes on the shores for a possible glimpse of wildlife.
Spend the evening relaxing in the on deck hot tub or enjoy a nightcap with fellow passengers while reminiscing in the salon.
Day 10 – Glacier Bay National Park
Travel close to 100 km toward the tidewater glaciers of Margerie and Grand Pacific. Enjoy the narration of the National Park Ranger onboard and learn about how the glaciers calve the massive icebergs floating in the bay. If the water is suitable, get up closer to the icebergs onboard a small skiff or kayak. Paddling along, you may see eagles, sea lions, puffins, mountain goats, bears, or moose, all amongst the backdrop of some of the most dramatic scenery on earth. Overnight at anchor in the bay.
Day 11 - Chatham Strait / Kuiu Island
The options are aplenty—it's Captain's Choice today. Stretching for 150 miles within the Tongass National Forest and chockfull of mysterious hidden coves, the narrow and deep passageway of Chatham Strait separates the Baranof Islands on the west with Kuiu to the east. Life teems below the surface and above—as you set out uncovering the gems of this untouched wilderness, take a tally of all that you spy by kayak, paddle board, or skiff. Enjoy a nightcap in the lounge with your fellow shipmates and trade stories of the many discoveries you made.
Day 12 – Thomas Bay
The Coast Mountain Range rises above Thomas Bay, sheltering the glacial landscapes of this remote wilderness. It’s a magical place, and led by your expedition team you can test your paddling skills, or opt for some R & R and hot cocoa on a skiff tour of the fjord. Uncover myriad sea life on an intertidal shore walk, or hike inland learning about the rainforest that blankets Southeast Alaska.
Day 13 - Port Houghton
Port Houghton is synonymous with the wildest Alaskan wilderness. As Muir did on his explorations in the late 1800s, feel the immensity of this cove’s remoteness. Calm as glass water. Misty mountains. And while you won’t likely come across other humans, you’re sure to cross paths with blue heron, bald eagles, harbor seals, oystercatchers, or black bear. Hike along a lushly vegetated river, or if it’s low-tide investigate tide pools. Navigating by your internal compass or with a guide, kayak and paddle board along the towering fjord or explore the wilds of a salt chuck. It doesn’t get more remote than this!
Day 14 – Onboard the Safari Endeavour – Fords Terror and Edicott Arm
Sailing into the area that is widely acclaimed as the most beautiful part of Alaska, have your camera ready in order to capture the steep cliffs walls of the fjord dropping into the sea. The pristine tidal inlet and fjord of Endicott Arm and Fords Terror are only a small part of the large number of designated Wilderness Areas in this region. Enjoy the rare opportunity to explore the Fjord by kayak or skiff. Take time to revel in presence of the ice-covered mountains high above and watch out for the actively calving glacier in Endicott Arm.
Relax in the salon this evening, after a delicious farewell dinner, and relive your favorite moments as your Expeditions Leaders present a “photo journal” of your adventure together.
Day 15 – Your Journey Comes to an End – Disembark
Savour your last breakfast onboard the ship before returning to Juneau and disembarking. You will be transferred to the airport in time to meet your flight (earliest flight possibility is 11:30am). Much too soon, you leave the clean air and colorful sights of the wilderness behind as your journey comes to an end.
Note - Due to the nature of cruise explorations, itineraries are guidelines and will change to maximize wildlife and natural encounters. Variations in itinerary and the order of days may occur.
Are you on the train the whole time?
All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.
Is this an escorted tour?
While our trips are not "escorted," we combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.
How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?
Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.
What types of trains are used?
Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.
Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.
VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.
