Please note, like most of our Canada rail packages & tours, this railway vacation can be customized to your needs - just ask one of our local experts when you call.

Eastbound itinerary is shown. A westbound itinerary is also available.

Day 1 – Arrival Vancouver
One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver is surrounded by towering mountains and sparkling ocean.

Feature Dinner in Vancouver
Did you know Vancouver is one of the top culinary destinations in the world? We want to make sure you don’t eat at the tourist trap restaurant across the street from your hotel, rather have the best meal in the best setting that ensures you make memories over a great meal!

Day 2 – On the Rocky Mountaineer – Vancouver to Kamloops
A lonesome wail sounds from the Canadian Rockies train whistle, and the smell of your breakfast drifts from the galley, as the Rocky Mountaineer leaves Vancouver on the first leg of its journey through the Canadian Rockies.

Over lunch you’ll climb the steep Fraser Canyon, past the thundering water of Hell’s Gate, and onto the high desert of British Columbia’s interior. Relax, chat, read - or stretch your legs on an outdoor viewing platform. In late afternoon, the train arrives in Kamloops where you observe the lifestyle of locals in a small Canadian Rockies town.

Day 3 – On the Rocky Mountaineer Train – into the Canadian Rockies
Over breakfast anticipation builds for your first sighting of the high peaks of the Canadian Rockies. As you travel you’ll learn about the history of the Canadian Rockies train and railroad, keep your eyes peeled for elk, bald eagles and bears. Finally, you enter the famous Spiral Tunnels - ascending slowly, round and round through the darkness, until, blinking, you emerge to find yourself high in the Canadian Rockies, surrounded by mighty peaks topped with snow. Overnight in Banff.

Day 4 – In the Canadian Rockies – Explore Banff
Fill your lungs with cool, fresh Rockies air and head out for a day of exploration.

You have
3 options to choose from today to help you enjoy Banff to its fullest.

• Option 1: Banff Sightseeing Tour
Explore the historic sights, hear the folklore, and visit scenic viewpoints surrounding the Banff town site on a small group bus tour.
Activity rating: Easy

• Option 2:
Banff Photography Tour
Explore the wilderness of Banff National Park with a private professional guide, and learn how to take great photos or improve your camera skills. This is a sure way to make friends and family at home jealous!
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 3:
Banff Heli-Hike and Picnic
Soar above majestic peaks and get away from the crowds of Banff on a guided heli-hike and picnic. Marvel at pristine and breathtaking vistas that will leave you speechless.
Activity rating: Moderate

Insider tip: We’ve included admission to the Banff Gondola today. We recommend an evening gondola ride, once the crowds have dispersed for the day. As you glide through the air, the panoramic vistas at the summit will completely take your breath away.

Day 5 – Deeper into the Rockies – Banff to Lake Louise
Today you’ll see perhaps the most famous view of the Rockies - the turquoise water of Lake Louise, surrounded by glaciers tumbling down from the high peaks. This is a place to relax, take a stroll or a hike - or go for a paddle in a canoe.

Upon arrival in the Lake Louise area, you can either choose to stay at the iconic Chateau Lake Louise, or at the intimate Moraine Lake Lodge.

Feature Dinner
This evening you’ll relax and refresh with an indulgent dining experience. Surrounded by spectacular lake views and attentive service, indulge in a 3-course meal in Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise’s Fairview Dining Room or at the Walter Wilcox dining room at Moraine Lake.

Day 6 – Depart Calgary
Filled with memories of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, today you transfer to the Calgary airport and home as your Rocky Mountain train vacation draws to a close.

Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

With the exception of our guided wildlife and northern lights train trips, our vacations are not typically "escorted." We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

Last evening I returned home after three weeks of deeply memorable and special time to places I'd never been but so wanted to. I cannot tell you how exceptional everything was on the Canadian Rockies Gold Leaf Special. It was extraordinary... read more from beginning to end and I cannot imagine a day passing the rest of my life without taking a moment to recall something about my adventure. And the service I received everywhere: on the train, Kamloops, Banff and Lake Louise; well, it simply could not be improved on or made better. Everything has worked perfectly and each moment has been joyous. The Rocky Mountaineer is unforgettable and virtually every person on board was delightful. And I received a set of post cards as a "Retirement" gift signed by them all. Then there was also a chilled bottle of wine and specialty chocolates in my room when I arrived Vancouver. And the accommodations have been spectacular. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your roles in making this trip a highpoint of my decade! Deepest, heartfelt thanks!

The Rocky Mountaineer was SPECTACULAR!  We couldn't have been more pleased with everything and everyone associated with the Mountaineer. We are so delighted we selected the Silver Service.  Our crew were informative, gracious,... read more funny and just plain delightful. We saw so much wildlife, including bears! The historical information they imparted was extremely interesting. The meals on board were prepared well and quite tasty. We are glad we did not have to 'move downstairs' to dine.  We had our full view the whole trip.  (Coincidentally, one of the Via Rail employees on our trip back to Vancouver had worked for the Mountaineer and called the Silver Service 'the hidden gem of the rail.) The transfer to the hotel in Kamloops went easily and we found a great restaurant next door to the hotel. There were delays on the tracks which we anticipated and understood. Gave us more time to gaze at the scenery. The transfer to our Banff hotel was effortless. In Banff we had a corner hotel room with a view of the gondola on one side and the beautiful mountains on the other. The staff was helpful, warm and friendly. We only ate one meal there and it was delicious! Our tour guide in the Rockies was quite informative and took us to see the surrounding areas of Banff. As the town is quite touristy, this view of Banff, away from the town, was great. Thank you for including the gondola in our package. I probably would not have taken it had we been on our own. I'm so glad we did. Our hotel at Lake Louise. OMG. This is undoubtedly one of the finest hotels in the world. They upgraded our room to a king bed with an incredible view.  As our room was not quite ready when we checked in, the Front Desk Clerk gave us drink tickets so we could relax while we awaited for availability. We dined in one of their fine restaurants and only wished we had more time there at this absolutely wonderful place. The tour along the Icefields Parkway was a great day. Our guide was incredibly informative, having been a Forester in his career. We learned so much and he was easily accommodating when wildlife was visible. We stopped to photograph bears crossing the road! The trip up to the glacier was a once in a lifetime experience. The VIA Rail 'Skeena' train to Prince Rupert - what a delightful experience this was. Was it long, yes, of course, but the scenery made it worth it. As we traveled in the 'off-season' the train consisted of a locomotive, passenger car and an observation car.  As the train was not crowded, most people spent their time up in the dome car. We planned ahead and bought sandwiches at a deli across from the train station in Jasper prior to boarding as we knew the food options on board would be limited. The hotel selected for our overnight in Prince George was very nice, a suite actually.  It is a $12 - $15 cab ride from the train station. The rooms are well appointed, with bathrobes and a make-up mirror! Good choice. The trip back on the 'Skeena' was even more delightful. We have been fortunate enough to travel many places in the world that are beautiful. However, Maligne Lake is among the most spectacular we've been to. The view is breathtaking! Thank you so much for including this tour in our itinerary. As before, we wouldn't have done this on our own. Our overnight rail journey on Via Rail back to Vancouver was a treat.  We've never slept on a train before. The dinner meal was quite good and the staff couldn't have been more friendly and delightful. Thank you to the entire Fresh Tacks team for putting together a trip of a lifetime for us. Your knowledge and guidance was invaluable. We met others on our journey who had booked through your firm and they were equally impressed. As we share our stories with friends and recommend the Rocky Mountaineer, we will encourage them to use Fresh Tracks.

The transfers you organised all just happened like clockwork

September 25, 2014

If you assume that as tourists the destinations/locations you visit are up to your expectation – and in all cases in Canada, this was the case for us – the next most important thing is having efficient transfers and travels between... read more locations. This can be quite stressful when you are in a place you don't know and have connecting flights, etc, you know you must make or it will be detrimental to your holiday. Despite our best efforts, we got caught a bit by circumstances outside our control in the US – stressful! But there was never a problem for us in Canada with the transfers and stuff you organised. They all just happened like clockwork. We loved the hotels you booked for us in Quebec City and Montreal in particular. They were wowie and well located! The Rocky Mountaineer was the experience of a lifetime for us. I mean, I don't think we would ever do it again but just breathtaking, isn't it. And our favourite place. Well, Carolyn and I might differ on this and it is really hard to pick one. While we were pretty lucky with the weather (and when it wasn't good, we just got out and did what we wanted to do anyway), sometimes it influences your first impressions. Banff was outstanding; took me a while to get into the grove of Montreal (very French, brash and confident, isn't it) but when we did, we had the most wonderful time, and while Quebec City was cold and wet for most of our visit, we were totally gobstruck with the old city. We just forgot about the weather and walked our socks off. And Vancouver Island, Victoria. Flying us there in the floatplane was not only a terrific timesaver for time poor tourists, but as I love aeroplanes, it was a great treat. Lake Louise – well, while the weather was a bit poor, it was astounding; just astounding. To see that lake, the glacier and the mountains; we could not believe it. The only thing that put us off a bit is that it is also very much a day tourist destination and everyone by virtue of the geography comes to the one location: the hotel and the boardwalk; there were busloads of tourists crowding the hotel lobby, eating places, etc. But it settled down at night. And cycling: great tour companies you chose in Vancouver and Montreal. Such a terrific way to see things at a good pace. We have to thank you again so much. We will certainly laud you and Fresh Tracks to all our friends and colleagues, and we hope one day to make it back to Canada.

We are definite fans of Fresh Tracks Canada!

Wow, what a wonderful vacation! The accommodations at each stop (Vancouver, Victoria, Kamloops, Banff and Lake Louise) were all beyond excellent. Loved the pampering and the attention to detail. We did the Hop On, Hop Off Big Bus... read more tour in Vancouver, plus did a partial walk around Stanley Park. If we had been there another day, I think we would have taken advantage of more the city has to offer. Sutton Place was incredible! Great to have had the transportation vouchers for the ferry to Victoria. Absolutely nothing to worry about. The Magnolia was wonderful as well, really liked the graciousness. Who does 'turn down' service anymore? Lovely touch! Enjoyed the bus tour and Butchart Gardens tour. At first I actually thought we'd have an escort at the gardens, but that would have definitely not been necessary at all. Going through the gardens at our own pace, and then retracing some of it, was perfect. What can I say about our Rocky Mountaineer experience? Fabulous! Goldleaf Service was definitely the way to go. Patrick is a train geek, when he found out we were in the first domed car and the first seat in the car, he was beside himself! We had met a very nice couple in Victoria and it turned out they were in the same train car, one seat back and across the aisle, so we had a most enjoyable time with them and now have new friends. The Rocky Mountaineer service and food was outstanding. We were booked into Rimrock Resort in Banff, absolutely terrific stay there. Would loved to have spent more time in Banff. The most memorable meal we had during the entire trip was at the Eden Restaurant. You had arranged a hiking trip through Discover Banff (Nate) and they did a great job. Ironically, the actual hike was in Lake Louise so we ended up making the trip to that area twice. We were in a group of 11 which was very manageable. Discover Banff also transported us to the Chateau Lake Louise and that driver did a very nice job driving along a more scenic route than the main highway and took a quick stop to show us an osprey nest. What is there not to like about the Chateau Lake Louise? Just had to stay there with its iconic views. We had a couple of splendid dinners and took another wonderful hike by ourselves. Your pre-trip package was very correct about packing for the unexpected! While feeling we were a bit burdened while traveling, it actually snowed in the mountains on July 24th and by the end of the hike, I not only had on my fleece jacket but also a wool hat and gloves. The brisk wind on Lake Agnes was really chilly, air temp was about 5 degrees Celsius. Transportation to Calgary by Brewster (Mike) was reliable and the driver provided some nice insights to us as we motored from Lake Louise into Banff to pick up other passengers. We are definite fans of Fresh Tracks Canada! Everything in the package was spelled out and well organized. We felt very well cared for with 'no worries'. Thanks so much for the wonderful trip.

Thank you for making our Canadian trip so absolutely terrific. We adored The Rocky Mountainer, every single second, from the bagpipe send-off to the delicious food, gourmet actually, every single meal, to the spectacular views,... read more of course. We found the nights in the hotel/motel terrific, exactly what we needed with very friendly staff. And it was glorious to have the keys in our hands before we got to the hotels so we could get to our rooms happily without standing in line. A very pampered piece of the tour! The Calgary Stampede was spectacular, boisterous, one of a kind, dazzling. We were there long, long hours each day because it was mesmerizing. Everyone should get to go to Calgary for Stampede!

I wanted to tell you once more how much Julia and I enjoyed the vacation you provided for us. I find myself 'daydreaming' every time I think of the absolutely terrific train ride through the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.... read more I have tried to relive every moment and still find new things to remember realizing even more how breathtaking it all was. I am very happy that we decided 'not to have any goals'. This allowed us to see and cherish every single moment and properly file it in our memories. Silly, yes but it keeps our memory of the journey special.
