Please note, like most of our Canada rail packages & tours, this eastern Canadian railroad vacation can be customized to your needs - just ask our local experts when you call.

Day 1 – Arrival in Montreal – Your Canada Train Vacation Begins
Your Quebec vacation begins with your arrival in Montreal where you will be picked up and transferred to your Montreal hotel and spend the rest of the day exploring this dynamic city. Walk down lively St. Catherine Street, lined with shops and sidewalk cafés, and then sample the fine cuisine and exuberant French Canadian nightlife. Overnight in a Montreal hotel.

Feature Dinner in Montreal
Travelling can be tiring - to ensure your vacation starts off with a smooth and relaxing start, we have selected one of our favourite restaurants for you in Montreal. With a menu created with a certain ‘French flair’, enjoy a showcase of the finest, freshest regional products. As an alternative option, upgrade to a Nordic Dinner Cruise on the St. Lawrence River.

Day 2 – Montreal
Bienvenue à Montréal! You have 3 options to choose from today to help you enjoy Montreal.

• Option 1: Hop on/Hop off Bus Tour

Day 3 – VIA Rail Canada - Montreal to Quebec City by Train
Board Via Rail Canada’s The Corridor train bound for Quebec City and travel along the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River, passing Cap-de-la-Madeleine and historic Trois-Rivières. Travelling aboard one of the Canadian trains carries you at an ideal speed to take in the views. Designated as a UNESCO world heritage site for its unique city walls and gates, Quebec City is full of the architectural wonders of Canada. Overnight in a Quebec City hotel.

Day 4 - Quebec City
Today you have 3 options to choose from to help you enjoy Quebec and its surrounding area:

• Option 1: Quebec Bus Tour
Spend the day discovering Quebec City’s French Canadian culture on a group bus tour. From your comfortable seat, enjoy the beautiful architecture of the fortified city, visit historic sites commemorating the battles between French and English, and take in the sights of this unique city.
Activity rating: Easy

• Option 2: Private Military Walking Tour
A favourite of history buffs, this tour allows you to discover Quebec City’s role as a military city and learn how various conflicts and sieges have shaped the 400-year-old capital. Visit the Citadel and its associated museum and from July to the beginning of September you may also see the changing of the guard. Visit the Plains of Abraham where the well-known battle took place between the French and British Armies in 1759.
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 3: The Food Tour – Canadian Signature Experience
So confident are the folks that run this tour – that they simply called it ‘The Food Tour’ – the only food tour you will need to take! This tour covers seven different venues, and samples about 15 different products. Try food of French Canadian origin from crepes to organic wine.
Activity rating: Moderate

Spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Overnight in Quebec City hotel.

Day 5 – Depart from Quebec City
Today your trip comes to an end, as a transfer takes you from your hotel to the Quebec City airport, in time for your flight home.

Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

While our trips are not "escorted," we combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

We enjoyed our vacation to Eastern Canada very much; if anything it was maybe a little too short. The train travel was wonderful - perhaps the highlight. Traveling "Business Plus" class enhanced the experience immensely. Both hotels... read more were, of course, very nice. We upgraded to Presidential Gold, which was only a modest additional amount, and well worth it. The walking tour in Toronto was really fun, as was the bicycle tour in Quebec City. All things considered, this was a very nice trip, which provided lots of great photos and great memories. We had a good time.

The trip was fantastic! Everything was so well taken care of that we didn't have to worry about any piece of the trip. All people with whom we interacted were punctual, knowledgeable, and very friendly. Our hotels were beautiful... read more as well and situated perfectly within Montreal and Quebec City! You took all the searching time and worry from the experience :) A full bonus was the amazing amount of snow and chill over Christmas and the New Year celebrations! The only piece we weren't too happy about was the meal on the Via Rail train. We fly very often, and for this trip we had to fly from Australia to Canada, within Canada, and back to Australia, so we eat many 'travel' meals. A business class three-course meal is expected to be well above what was offered on the train, as what we received was economy at best. I also think we ate such amazing meals throughout our entire Canadian holiday that that one highlighting our Eastern Canadian trip was disappointing. Our family was impressed with the stories we told upon return and the level of service we experienced with you and everyone involved throughout the actual trip.

April 4, 2009

We had a wonderful trip in Quebec. Although it snowed and rained 60% of the time, it did not dampen the spirits of my daughter and I. What we liked: (1) The location of the hotels - Days Inn in Montreal and Hotel Pur in Quebec City... read more are both excellent. We loved the fact we could basically walk to all the main attractions, the basilicas, the cafes, Underground, etc. (2) Tours in both cities were great too. The drivers were very knowledgeable and provided us with a lot of good information. (3) The food was most wonderful. We felt like we could have lived on croissants, crepes, and lattes alone. If only we had cafes, bakeries or patisseries down the street. What could be improved: If we could have had more info on transfer arrangements. I had to research on the internet about taxi and VIA Rail stations. Of course they are all close by and the hotel staff provided prompt service. Still, I think most people like to know exactly what would happen and the costs of these items before they start the trip. I have visited English Canada several times but have always felt like I have not really left the US. In Quebec, I was really in foreign land. Of course the fact that my daughter has studied French for 5 years helps. I could not pronounce or remember French names of streets/destinations and food. She got them all for me :-) Otherwise I may have felt a little lost. We enjoyed this trip a lot and would like to bring other family members to visit again. Thank you for arranging this wonderful trip.
