Itinerary

Please note, like most of our Canada rail packages & tours, this railway vacation can be customized to your needs - just ask one of our local experts when you call.

Eastbound itinerary shown. Westbound itinerary is also available.

Day 1 – Begin your Canadian Rockies Train Vacation – Arrival in Vancouver
One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver is surrounded by towering mountains and sparkling ocean. From the very beginning, we take care to ensure your vacation is off to the best start! Walk out of the airport and right into a private vehicle. Your driver will help orient you to our hometown, Vancouver!

Feature Dinner in Vancouver
Did you know Vancouver is one of the top culinary destinations in the world? We want to make sure you don’t eat at the tourist trap restaurant across the street from your hotel, rather have an amazing meal in the best setting that ensures you make memories over a great meal!

Day 2 – Whistler Sea to Sky Climb Train Journey
Step aboard the Rocky Mountaineer on the Whistler Sea to Sky Climb route for the start of a three-day train journey to the Canadian Rockies. Today you’ll travel along the ‘sea to sky’ on a half-day train journey from Vancouver to the Olympic village of Whistler, for a relaxing afternoon and overnight stay amid the beauty of BC’s Coastal Mountains.

Along the way, the Whistler Mountaineer train winds along the shores of Howe Sound, a deep fjord surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Then slowly chugs into the mountains, besides the rushing waters of the Cheakamus River, with waterfalls cascading down from the glaciers above.

Get the best view in Whistler on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola this afternoon. Board the longest and highest lift in the world for an unparalleled perspective of British Columbia’s rooftop – from incomparable views of towering volcanic peaks to coastal rainforest. Overnight in Whistler.

Day 3 – Onboard the Rocky Mountaineer Train – Whistler to Quesnel
The Rocky Mountaineer’s whistle sounds and the smell of breakfast wafts from the galley as you pull out of Whistler heading north. Over coffee you may chat with your fellow passengers or simply gaze out of the window at some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Your train vacation is just beginning, so you can relax and take it in.

In a single day, you will travel through the majestic Fraser Canyon, by the winding shores of Anderson and Seton Lakes, and into the ‘cowboy country’ of the high-desert Cariboo Plateau.

In the canyon, you may wonder - not for the last time - at the feat of engineering this railroad represents. As you gaze down from your window, thousands of feet to the rushing waters of the Fraser River below, spare a thought for the chutzpah of the 19th century railroad barons who conceived the project - and the skill and hard work of the engineers, surveyors and migrant workers who built it. Overnight in a hotel in the small town of Quesnel.

Day 4 – Onboard the Rocky Mountaineer Train – Quesnel to Jasper
This morning return to your home on the rails – the Rocky Mountaineer train. This is the day you’ve been waiting for – the day you travel through the breathtaking beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Moose, bald eagle & bear are plentiful up here, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled! Seeing the high peaks of the Canadian Rockies for the first time is a thrilling moment and as you step off the train in the quaint mountain town of Jasper the smell of pristine mountain air fills your lungs. Everyday cares are far behind as you look forward to four more days exploring the wonderful Canadian Rockies. Overnight in Jasper.

The road runs south down the spine of the Canadian Rockies, and your driver-guide will give an expert commentary so you don’t miss a thing. Near the highest point of your journey, a highlight is the ‘Ice Explorer’ ride onto the Athabasca Glacier itself - where you can walk a little and get a sense of the glacier’s movement and crevasses. You will also have a chance for a spectacular view on the Glacier Skywalk.
Activity Rating: Easy

• Option 2: Private Icefields Tour with Helicopter Experience
Spend the day with a private driver-guide, to explore the Icefields at your own pace. Then, step away from the crowds and take a helicopter tour abundant in natural beauty, glaciers and waterfalls. Leave from an exclusive Icefields base and soar over Cline Pass and over Cline, Lion and Lioness Glaciers. You’ll also view a spectacular 900ft waterfall flowing from two aqua green lakes!
Activity Rating: Easy

Upon arrival in the Lake Louise area, you can either choose to stay at the iconic Chateau Lake Louise, or at the intimate Moraine Lake Lodge.

Feature Dinner
No matter how you choose to tour, this evening you’ll relax and refresh with an indulgent dining experience. Surrounded by spectacular lake views and attentive service, indulge in a 3-course meal in Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise’s Fairview dining room, or Moraine Lake’s Walter Wilcox dining room.

Day 7 – In the Canadian Rockies – Lake Louise to Banff
This morning you wake up in the heart of the Rockies in what must surely be one of the most beautiful places on the planet - Lake Louise. Whether the sun is shimmering on the water or a mist hangs over the surrounding peaks and glaciers, the magic of this place is unmistakable. The water is often turquoise, and so pure-looking that you want to jump right in! This afternoon, travel from Lake Louise to end in the little mountain town of Banff.

Insider tip: Ask us about our Lake Louise activity menu to make the most of your day with a guided canoe, guided hike, gondola ride, or decadent afternoon tea service!

Day 8 – In the Canadian Rockies – Explore Banff

• Option 2:
Banff Photography Tour
Explore the wilderness of Banff National Park with a private professional guide, and learn how to take great photos or improve your camera skills. This is a sure way to make friends and family at home jealous!
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 3:
Banff Heli-Hike and Picnic
Soar above majestic peaks and get away from the crowds of Banff on a guided heli-hike and picnic. Marvel at pristine and breathtaking vistas that will leave you speechless.
Activity rating: Moderate

Insider tip: We’ve included admission to the Banff Gondola today. We recommend an evening gondola ride, once the crowds have dispersed for the day. As you glide through the air, the panoramic vistas at the summit will completely take your breath away.

Day 9 – Leaving the Canadian Rockies – From Banff to Calgary
Much too soon, you leave the clean air and breathtaking beauty of Canada’s Rockies behind. Your vacation concludes as you travel through the foothills of the Canadian Rockies to Calgary Airport for your flight home. Yet you take with your memories to revisit and treasure for a lifetime.

Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

While our trips are not "escorted," we combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

Our trip was magnificent! From the time we left Vancouver to the end it could not have been more perfect. The train, the tours, all were wonderful. Canada is a beautiful country and everyone so courteous. There is no way we would... read more have known how to do this ourselves and we are grateful. When we got to the airport in San Antonio it was raining so, as you know, our flight way delayed 2 1/2 hours. Upon arrival in Seattle we noticed that one of our suitcases was wet so we opened it and found our clothes to be soaking wet. We told the Southwest people but they could have cared less. Since we missed the connection to Vancouver that you scheduled for us and so graciously helped us get the Greyhound Bus ride to Vancouver we will be forever grateful. Upon arrival in Whistler, guess what – there was a washer and dryer in our room at the Delta Whistler Village Suites. Ya Hoo – everything solved with the wet clothes. Now this was a free night in Vancouver for us anyway per favour of 'Rocky Mountaineer' and our wonderful Canadian vacation expert Helen, of Fresh Tracks Canada here in Vancouver. We 'met' Helen on the net and I can recommend her unreservedly to anyone thinking of coming this way to visit. She has been so friendly and efficient. We have felt well assured of all our travel arrangements. And I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone coming here. It's so central and user friendly. Not the least bit snobbish as I had somehow expected it to be. Very good. What a welcome back it was – made more special by Tracey, the ninth floor 'manager' who took us to the lounge for coffee and canapes and a magnificent view over city and waterfront from the Gold patio. She comes from Toronto, Canada, and so we had a good starting point as Toronto, Australia, was such an important place in my life for many years. After this delightful small meal (we had been fed so well on the train that we only needed/wanted a few canapes for dinner) we went for a walk on the waterfront. David stopped to take a photo for a father and daughter visiting from Ontario and, as you do, we got chatting until the sun went down and the city lights began to twinkle, some reflected in the calm waters of the bay. It was a great way to finish our time here. We could stay for another week and not see all the things we want to do in Vancouver... So I guess we will be back.
