Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

While our trips are not "escorted," we combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

I can not thank you enough for our wonderful Rocky Mountain trip. There is not one negative thing I can say.  The schedule ran like clock work, our tours were right on time, with our names listed.  The hotels had our rooms... read more ready and waiting. The tours you booked were timed just right, the guides were pleasant, very knowledgeable and helpful when needed. The scenery was breathtaking, I guess we have to thank God for that, but YOU arranged for us to see his handy work. The train was wonderful, we had the SilverLeaf booking and I could not have been more pleased. The meals were more then we could have hoped for and the staff were A #1. We were on the last train for the season so people were waiting as we passed through the towns to wave a Good-bye until Spring. This just added to the fun! The hotel accommodations were also top notch. We were able to take advantage of the pools and hot tubs, which helped  keep our old bodies in shape for the next days adventures. You also did a great job selecting the locations of the hotels. The views from the hotels were awesome and we had fun visiting the towns and getting to know the areas. I guess what I am trying to say is, great job - well done!

We wanted to write and let you know how much we enjoyed our Fresh Tracks Canada trip. The trip surpassed our expectations throughout. We wanted to do something memorable to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and this trip... read more delivered! Now that we've been home a few days and had time to think about the trip and look at the photos we took, we realize what a great trip it was. The photos don't do the beautiful views justice, but do serve as a reminder of how magnificent that part of the world is. We will recommend Fresh Tracks Canada to anyone who asks about our trip. You, Lucy and Louise were always available to answer our questions or concerns promptly. Thank you for tailoring the trip for us and making it a real vacation since we didn't have to bother with details because you had already taken care of them! Many thanks

The trip was amazing

It's difficult to know where to start. The trip was amazing! The hosts on the Rocky Mountaineer, both upstairs and downstairs in the dining room, were wonderful! Very attentive and knowledgeable, helpful and funny. Food and drinks... read more and snacks all day long. Incredible scenery. The glacier. Athabasca Falls. The Peak-2-Peak at Whistler. The list goes on. Our driver on the transfer from Jasper to Lake Louise was excellent. He had been in the forest service for 20+ years and was very knowledgeable. We even had a brand new rail car on our Banff-Kamloops-Vancouver portion. Leather seats, push a button and your seat reclined, lumbar support, foot rest! And the tray came out of the arm of your chair rather than from the back of the seat in front of you- like in first class on planes. Talk about spoiled. The Fairmont hotels were beautiful. Thanks so much for the upgraded room in Vancouver at the beginning of our trip. The corner views were great. We were even upgraded to a Jr Suite in Jasper. Everyone from Rocky Mountaineer were very gracious. We are so glad that we did it, and that we had Fresh Tracks to make it a perfect "Bucket List" experience! Thank you!

What beautiful country and lovely people! The Rocky Mountaineer was a wonderful experience. It was amazing how they organized and managed a group of over 700 people. All the places we went and everything on time.  Busses showed... read more up when due and tours were given by such knowledgeable and friendly guides. Thank you very much for arranging our trip.  I will be certain to recommend Fresh Tracks Canada and, specifically Angie Bosworth, to all my friends and business associates.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything went according to the schedule, all pick-ups and drop-offs went like clockwork. Hotels were as described, some absolutely fabulous, for example, the Chateau at Lake Louise and the Rimrock in Banff.... read more We had to ask for another room at the Empress on Vancouver Island, the room was not clean, the windows in the bathroom had not been cleaned for months, the replacement room was better and we put the matter behind us and enjoyed our stay on the Island. We have not ruled out another trip to Canada in the future. The Rocky Mountaineer was a great way to appreciate the scenery and we enjoyed being well looked after on the trains. We took bad to handling our own luggage when we left the train, as we were spoilt with it being collected and delivered to the next hotel stop. We definitely plan to visit some of the towns we visited on the Rocky Mountaineer, especially Lake Louise and Banff and spend more time in Kamloops and visit Devils Leap (we passed it while on the train). We shall contact you again in the future and did recommend you to fellow passengers who had had problems with booking the Rocky Mountaineer. Thank you again for all your help in arranging this fabulous trip which went like clockwork from start to finish.
