Westbound itinerary shown. Eastbound follows the same itinerary in reverse.

Day 1, 2, and 3 – Your Across Canada Train Vacation Begins – Onboard VIA Rail’s Canadian Train
It’s hard not to be immediately captured by the exciting sounds of Canada’s largest city, as you are whisked from the Toronto airport to Union Station. Here, The Canadian train awaits and the magic of your across Canada rail trip sinks in. You are shown to your private cabin complete with a large picture window and seats that become a comfortable bed. A panoramic dome car – where you can relax, unwind, and take in all the sights – is steps from your cabin. Tasty meals are served in an elegant yet casual dining car and chatting over a drink with fellow travelers keeps you engaged throughout your trans Canadian journey. Climb into your warm bed and let yourself be rocked to sleep by the clickety-click of timeless tracks - if only every vacation was so relaxing. After three peaceful nights on the Canadian train, you spot the snow-covered peaks of the Canadian Rockies. Overnight onboard the Canadian.

Day 4 – Enter the Canadian Rockies – Arrive in Jasper
Step off the Canadian Train and take a deep breath – the crisp mountain air is revitalizing after your long trans-Canadian journey. You are surrounded by mountains and trees - Jasper is in the middle of pure pristine wilderness. Enjoy a transfer to your charming hotel in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Overnight in Jasper.

Insider tip: Take a moment to step outside after dark and see the stars like you’ve never seen them before! Jasper is the second largest dark sky preserve in the world.

Day 5 – Across Canada Train Trip Continues – Explore Jasper National Park
Spend the day exploring the jewel of the Rockies, Jasper.

You have
3 options to choose from today to help you enjoy Jasper to its fullest.

• Option 1: Maligne Lake Cruise or Walk
Watch out for antlers peeking through the trees on this small group sightseeing tour by mini- coach to Maligne Canyon, Maligne Lake and a cruise to Spirit Island.
Activity rating: Easy

• Option 2: Jasper Nature Walk
Explore Jasper National Park on a professionally guided interpretive walk. Enjoy a leisurely pace, and plenty of time for photos and discussion. See wildlife, get close to rare alpine wildflowers, and stunning valley views.
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 3: Sidecar Motorcycle Tour
Experience the thrill of riding in a sidecar of a powerful Harley Davidson touring motorcycle - view famous lakes, historical viewpoints and attractions of the Jasper area. This is a sightseeing tour unlike any other for 1 or 2 people.
Activity rating: Easy

Day 6 – On the Rocky Mountaineer Train – Jasper to Kamloops
The train’s whistle breaks the morning silence as the Rocky Mountaineer pulls out of the train station in Jasper and you continue across Canada. Step onto the outdoor viewing platform for unobstructed views, cool breezes, and if you’re lucky a light misting off Pyramid Falls. Early in the evening, after a day of good food, great company, and awe-inspiring scenery, the Rocky Mountaineer train arrives in Kamloops. Perhaps enjoy a glass of the local Okanagan Valley wine before bedding down for a good night’s rest. Overnight in Kamloops.

Day 7 – Continue Across Canada by Train – Kamloops to Vancouver
This morning, return to the Rocky Mountaineer and travel through the mighty Thompson Canyon before catching sight of awesome Hell’s Gate, where 200 million gallons of water push through the narrow gorge. This afternoon you travel through the lush Fraser Valley before arriving in Vancouver. Vancouver’s laid back atmosphere is just what you need after your train trip across Canada. Overnight in Vancouver.

Day 8 – With Fond Memories Made – Depart Vancouver
Much too soon, you leave the clean air and colorful sights of Canada behind as your Canadian train trip comes to an end.

Common Questions

Are you on the train the whole time?

All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.

Is this an escorted tour?

With the exception of our guided wildlife and northern lights train trips, our vacations are not typically "escorted." We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.

What types of trains are used?

Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.

VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

I just wanted to thank you for all your help and advice and patience with the unending questions when we were getting ready for our "once in a lifetime" trip through Canada. The Rocky Mountaineer was unbelievable, although we... read more could not eat for about two days after. The food was unending and delicious every time. The service was great and our coordinator was the best. Anything we wanted, needed, or didn't even think of, she was there with everything. Our accommodations at the hotels were top shelf. The only thing was that Kamloops was closed up for the night when we arrived so we didn't get to enjoy their quaint little city. Jasper was amazing. The beauty of that area was truly awe inspiring. The tours were fantastic, especially the one to Spirit Island. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Those side trips were really enjoyable. Overall, it was the trip that Dave had on his bucket list and it was fantastic! Thank you again for all your help. We could not have gotten through all the details without you.

Getting off the train at Winnipeg to temperature of –2 with a wind chill taking it down to –9 and snow! The hotel was outstanding despite the 12 hour delay to the Via rail train and arriving at 1am ,once we looked out the... read more cabin the next morning to a crystal clear lake surrounded by snow capped mountains the delay was forgotten As we drove out along by the lakes we witnessed a brown bear just ambling along the lake bed, superb! The views around maligne lake were breathtaking (there was still ice on the lake which added to the scene). The Rocky Mountaineer exceeded my expectations. Not only were the service, views, food and commentary excellent, but not having to worry about moving luggage from hotel to hotel was superb. Despite it being the only day we had poor weather (not that poor just overcast when the other days had been blue skies) the tour of Vancouver was great especially Granville island. So overall the trip was excellent and thanks for your arrangements the pick ups to and from various airports/rail station all worked out fine. Once again many thanks for arranging our trip.

It was especially nice having all of the details taken care of for us

The meals and menu selection were excellent - fine dining! The hotels in Banff were fantastic! The rooms were great, the location, the scenery, and the amenities were top-notch. We really enjoyed our stay! The Maligne Lake tour was good and we had time to visit the town and get plenty of souvenirs. The Goldleaf Service on the Rocky Mountaineer - WOW! This is the only way to go on this train!  First class service all the way!  We were not disappointed with anything on this part of the trip.  In fact, it exceeded our expectations.  The staff were very professional and made the trip very comfortable and interesting.  The meals/menu selection were again - fine dining at its best.   The hotels in Kamloops and Vancouver were very nice - clean, comfortable, and helpful staff. Kamloops was a bit disappointing, but Vancouver sure made up for it!  We enjoyed the harbor cruise and the hop-on hop-off bus tour around town. Overall, we were very pleased with this trip.  The package that you put together for us with the vouchers and information was very helpful and covered everything we needed to know. It was better than going with a tour group because we had the freedom to go see and do what we wanted to on our own time. It was especially nice having all of the details - transportation, accommodations, tours, etc. -  taken care of for us, so we could enjoy the sights and scenery of Canada.   Thank you again for putting this package together for us. The trip is complete and checked off on the bucket list!

Sulphur and the trip up the Ice Field Parkway to the glacier. How can I ever thank you for arranging the best trip ever at such short notice. Your choice of hotels was perfect for both location and comfort. Of course the Rocky Mountaineer Train was an unforgettable experience. The staff, food and scenery were perfect. No one who rides that train will ever forget it. I have already recommended you and Fresh Tracks Canada to my friends. Marie and I are sorry about the awful floods at Calgary, Canmore and other towns along the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Our hearts go out to all those who have been evacuated. Anna and I arrived home last night wishing we had many more days to spend in your beautiful country. Every arrangement you made was perfect, from getting picked up at the Toronto airport and transported to our hotel to getting on... read more the train in Toronto on our way to Jasper. While our sleeper car in Via Rail was compact, our accommodations at Sawridge Inn in Jasper were spectacular, snow capped mountains and pine trees outside our balcony. A grand bus tour in Jasper National Park to Maligne Lake where we saw caribou, American black bears, and mule deer on the way exceeded our expectations and tested our wallets in downtown Jasper. And what a treat to board the Rocky Mountaineer and witness the beauty of the mountains and forests. We even saw a female elk with two of her babies walking along a marshy area within fifty feet of the train. And the Silver Leaf service to Kamloops could not have been better, fabulous meals and snacks served right at our seats with huge panoramic windows so we didn't miss the opportunities to see eagles and osprey overhead. Our only regret was that it had to come to an end but not really since we were privately transported to the Sutton Place Hotel where four chocolate covered Strawberries welcomed us with a chocolate inscription, 'Happy Anniversary' written on plate. We didn't take advantage of the pool, fitness centre, sauna, whirlpool or spa since we were in the heart of the downtown area and walked everywhere. Our first night was dinner at the Vancouver Lookout tower restaurant where we shared a gorgeous sunset with each other and toasted our wonderful trip which was too quickly coming to a close. The next night, following a day spent in Stanley Park enjoying a horse drawn carriage ride around the park and a visit to the Vancouver Aquarium to see the fantastic sea life exhibits, including the new jelly fish and African pelican areas, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Gerards in the hotel with a Canadian classmate I had not seen in years and met his wife for the first time. Needless to say children and grandchildren dominated the conversation. Sunday it was off to Granville Island where we ate, ate, and ate! Although Anna bought a beautiful designer silk shawl which she wore to dinner that night. Sidebar to the shawl, the ends were held together by a very small magnet so the shawl could be draped is several different ways. Well, we were sitting on the patio of the restaurant and the magnet stuck to a metal cylinder and it too a few seconds to get the magnet to let go. Did I say small? I should have said very powerful too. Monday morning we had breakfast in the hotel and took our last walk down Burrard Street before the town car arrived to take us to the airport. Needless to say we didn't want to leave but reality must come to fruition. Would we do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat. Would we contact Fresh Tracks Canada again? Yes, in a heartbeat. Would we request you two to put our package together? Yes, in a heartbeat. Can we thank you enough? Never.
