Day 1 - Canada vacation begins in Vancouver
Arrive at the Vancouver International Airport, for an overnight stay. Relax after your long flight, anticipating tomorrow’s adventures. Vancouver is one of the few cities in the world where a typical day might include a morning on the majestic local ski slopes, a relaxing afternoon sail or round of golf, and an evening enjoying the local nightlife in our Entertainment District on Granville Street or Yaletown. With a mild climate and so much to do, it’s no wonder people flock to this west coast city. Places to visit include Chinatown and Gastown, the Museum of Anthropology, and Granville Island. But for a real taste of the Vancouver lifestyle, we suggest renting a bicycle and cycling around our famous Seawall and Stanley Park. Stop at English Bay for the oceanview and a bite to eat, or head to Robson Street to shop at the trendy stores. Overnight in Vancouver
Day 2 - Journey to Victoria and Vancouver Island
Today, prepare for your next adventure as your board a helicopter in the heart of Vancouver. This stunning 35 minute flight will take you for a breathtaking ride over the gulf islands before arriving in downtown Victoria. The capital of British Columbia is the very ‘British’ town of Victoria – where people still ‘take tea’ in the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel, and horse-drawn carriages offer a very gentle tour of the historic harbour. Established in 1843 as a fort for the Hudson's Bay Company, Victoria's British ancestry is apparent in the double-decker buses, horse-drawn carriages, formal gardens and tearooms. The city is now a cosmopolitan centre with a lively entertainment scene and a wonderful array of attractions. After hotel check-in, head out to explore - a harborside stroll is the perfect way to stretch your legs and get acquainted with this quaint coastal city. Overnight in Victoria
Day 3 - Victoria Sightseeing
The morning is yours to explore Victoria, a city filled with interesting locations and an abundance of history. Discover Government Street through Old Town to Victoria’s Chinatown, a National Historic Site of Canada. Here you pass through Fan Tan Alley and the amazing Gates of Harmonious Interest in the oldest Chinatown in North America! Guests traveling in December may also have the chance to enjoy the Butchart Gardens at night, lit up by thousands of twinkling Christmas lights. The choice is up to you! This afternoon take part in a time-honoured tradition for over a century, the world renowned tea lobby of The Fairmont Empress has served Victoria's grandest tradition of Afternoon Tea. Afternoon Tea is an absolute 'must do' for all who visit Victoria. Overnight in Victoria
Day 4 - Victoria to Vancouver
Travel back to Vancouver by coach and ferry, where glistening harbor waters and snowcapped mountains complement the downtown skyline. Sip a cocktail overlooking the busy harbor at sunset, join Vancouverites on a circuit of the Sea Wall, or start loading up on some souvenirs from trendy Robson Street. Overnight in Vancouver
Day 5 - Vancouver Sightseeing
With so much to see in this city, the choice is up to you. Choose to spend the day getting to know Vancouver. Visit English Bay and Stanley Park, before traveling to the lush North Shore. A thrilling experience awaits at the Capilano Suspension Bridge, swaying high above the canyon floor. For a more unique opportunity, choose to see one of the largest populations of bald eagles in the world as they feed on salmon that spawn in the glacial water from a remarkable vantage point – the river. Gently float by in a raft with a knowledgeable guide teaching you about the life cycle of these birds along with the incredible flora and fauna ending at a riverside lodge where you enjoy some stew by the fire. Overnight in Vancouver
Day 6 - Vancouver to Whistler sightseeing
Your adventure continues today, as you journey to Whistler. With a small group and naturalist guide, travel the spectacular Sea to Sky Highway through some of Canada's most rugged coastal mountain scenery. Walk through old growth rain forest to witness ancient trees. Stop to view stunning Shannon Falls, before arriving in charming Whistler. Feel the excitement of this busy mountain hamlet, and get out to join in the fun. Overnight in Whistler
Day 7 - Discover Whistler on your Canada Vacation
Today, choose from two unique Whistler experiences. Spend a day at the Scandinave Spa, situated just north of Whistler Village. This unique spa overlooks incredible mountain vistas and valleys. Invigorate and cleanse your body and mind in the hot baths and refreshing waterfalls, melt away and breathe in the invigorating mountain air. Alternatively, for those looking for more adventure, take part in a Whistler snowmobile tour. Break away from the crowds and enjoy the ultimate backcountry adventure. This tour is perfect for both beginner and experienced riders. Drive your own snowmobile as you zip down the vast, well-manicured trail network offering limitless adventure possibilities. Overnight in Whistler
Day 8 - Whistler, then onboard the Canadian train
You are on vacation, so enjoy a relaxing morning. Later this afternoon, a transfer takes you from Whistler to Vancouver’s Pacific Central station. Your train awaits, so climb aboard VIA Rail's Canadian train and settle into your cozy cabin. Meet new traveling companions over a glass of wine in the lounge car, as you anticipate tomorrow’s voyage through the snow-covered Canadian Rockies. Tonight you are lulled to sleep by the rocking of the train, as snow falls outside. Overnight on board in a private cabin.
Day 9 - Arrive in Jasper National Park
Peek out of your window this morning to see soaring mountain valleys, and snow-covered trees. Watch for wildlife as you relax in the Canadian train’s glass roofed dome car. The crisp mountain air will refresh you as you step off the train in Jasper, one of the Canadian Rockies’ quaint mountain towns. Overnight in Jasper
Day 10 - Your choice of winter activities in Jasper
Unlike most Canada tours, you can choose the pace today - it's your trip! Join a small group to walk eerie Maligne Canyon, adorned with frozen waterfalls and alive with wildlife. See ice-climbers scaling the canyon walls - a thrilling sight! Alternately, take a winter wildlife spotting tour, guided by a local expert. Maybe you'll be the first to see a moose’s antlers peeking through the branches of an evergreen mountain forest. Feeling content and rosy-cheeked after the day's adventures, snuggle up next to a roaring fire with a glass of wine to reminisce. Overnight in Jasper
Day 11 - Travel the Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise on your Canada Vacation
This morning, say goodbye to beautiful Jasper. Embark on a spectacular journey along the Icefields Parkway as each turn reveals frozen waterfalls and endless mountain valleys. The grand finale of the day awaits, as Lake Louise reveals itself. Snow encrusted peaks seem to plunge into the frozen waters, and glaciers tumble down the mountainsides.
Spend the rest of the day on a tour of your choice - jingle through the lakeside forest on a sleigh ride, or glimpse winter wildlife on a guided snowshoe tour along the Great Divide. A gourmet dinner will warm your bones at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise’s this evening. Overnight in Lake Louise
Day 12 - Lake Louise to Banff
Spend the morning at leisure in Lake Louise. Later this morning, travel the short distance from Lake Louise to Banff. Feel the mountains’ timeless embrace as you enjoy the day exploring on your own. Banff is the liveliest of the mountain towns on your Canadian holiday and the energy on Banff Avenue is contagious. Quaint shops give off a warm welcoming glow, and the scent of homemade maple fudge wafts out of sweet shops. Overnight in Banff
Day 13 - Explore the Canadian Rockies – Banff Heli Tour
You pick the pace today, as you soar over snow covered mountain valleys in a helicopter. If you're feeling energetic, meet a team of eager sled-huskies waiting to race you along mountaintop trails. For those wanting an easier pace, sit back and enjoy a half hour flightseeing adventure with a bird's eye view of the magnificent Canadian Rockies. Overnight in Banff.
Day 14 - Banff to Calgary Airport
Filled with memories of winter splendor, take time to watch for wildlife as you depart the Canadian Rockies. A two hour journey to Calgary's International Airport will bring your Canada vacation to an end.
Are you on the train the whole time?
All of our trips include some stops to get off the train, to explore Canada's beautiful national parks and unique cities. However, if you're keen to maximize your time onboard, we'll pair you up with the perfect experience.
Is this an escorted tour?
With the exception of our guided wildlife and northern lights train trips, our vacations are not typically "escorted." We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe. Click here for a more detailed comparison.
How do the trains work in Canada compared to the US or UK?
Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in Europe and the US), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, plus great food.
What types of trains are used?
Two main companies operate trains in Canada: VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer.
Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along 3 of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.
VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of Northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

We loved every minute of our trip
December 25, 2012
We loved Vancouver and Whistler. Although we enjoyed our brief stop in Jasper and Lake Louise, we really preferred our time in the 'cities'. Banff was also very nice. I would highly recommend the chef tasting tour we did in Vancouver.... read more It was fabulous. My husband said that he really enjoyed it and he was not expecting to. The people of Canada are wonderful. I love the British influence. My husband commented daily on the fabulous newspaper and enjoyed how well written it was. The train trip was an experience worth taking too. I do have one suggestion for future guests. When riding a snow mobile, it is much more comfortable to drive your own vehicle as opposed to riding on the back. I was not told this until we had been riding about 15 minutes, hanging on for dear life. When we stopped for a break the guide said, 'oh yea, it's pretty tough to ride on the back'. It was torture! Very bumpy and I thought I would get thrown off at any time. I won't be doing that again. Though, the photos I got at the top of the mountain were spectacular. The entire team that picked us up and transported us from place to place were fabulous. They were great about sharing local information and facts. I have shown my photos to many and several of my friends are very interested in planning a trip. I have, of course, told them to call you and go online. David and I loved every minute of our trip and it exceeded our expectations.
